Trick-Or-Treat!!!

Annie dressed as a Cowgirl, and her friend, Alli, dressed as a vampire. The girls had great fun, and, Annie lasted twice as long as she ever has! I'm glad it's only a two-hour deal in Bellevue!

Oh... the last pic is of Troy and Missi -- the lovebirds!!

A recent visit to Chicago

Dad, Annie and I went to Chicago to visit family and so that I could attend my 25th Eighth Grade Class Reunion from St. Francis of Rome School in Cicero. The trip was wonderful, and Annie made a "New Best Cousin Ever" in my cousin, Dave. Here are some photos from our trip!
Annie and Dave, Annie and Gramma, Aunty Barbie, Uncle Bill and Annie.

Unfortunately, the photos I took from the class reunion didn't turn out at all. I was disappointed, until I began receiving links to other classmates' pictures! Now, I can scrapbook the event!
Altogether, the trip was wonderful and I am so glad that I went!

The History of Columbus Day

Okay, this is really off topic, but, amusing to some degree. I suppose you have to know kindergartners, in order to understand the humor in this.

Each day, I ask Annie what she did at school today. Since today, she came outside wearing a Columbus hat, I figured it was a lesson, so I asked her about it.

The following is a transcript (pretty much, verbatim, too) of the conversation between Annie and me (I'm the Mom).

Enjoy -- and Chuck, don't be mad!! Annie's too young to know the whole truth about Columbus!!

Amy

Mom: What did you learn at school today?
Annie: Nothing, we just played, ate lunch, had two recesses and played.
Mom: Isn't today a special day?
Annie: No... Yeah
Mom: What is it?
Annie: Columbus Day.
Mom: What's so special about Columbus?
Annie: He sailed in a ship.
Mom: From where?
Annie: Spain.
Mom: And where did he go?
Annie: Spain.
Mom: Well, yes, he lived in Spain, and he boarded his ship in Spain, then, he traveled across??
Annie: Spain.
Mom: The ocean?
Annie: Oh, yeah.
Mom: And, where did he go?
Annie: Spain.
Mom: He went, by ship, from Spain, across the ocean, to Spain?
Annie: Yes.
Mom: Okay, well, what did he do when he arrived back in Spain?
Annie: He met some Indians.
Mom: What did he do to the Indians?
Annie: He liked them.
Mom: Oh, really? Was he mean to them?
Annie: No.
Mom: Are you sure?
Annie: Mom, he didn't kill them.
Mom: Okay, so, Columbus liked the Native Americans?
Annie: No, he liked the Indians.
Mom: Well, Indians are people from India, right? So, Native Americans are people from America.
Annie: No, they were Indians.
Mom: Okay, so Columbus liked the Indians.
Annie: Yes. And then they liked him, too, and so they cooked him dinner.
Mom: Oh, the Indians cooked Columbus dinner?
Annie: Yes. And then he got back on his ship.
Mom: And where did he go?
Annie: Back to the island.
Mom: What island?Annie: You know! Spain!
Mom: And, what did Columbus do when he was back at the Island of Spain?
Annie: Mom, he went to the park.
Mom: He went to a park?
Annie: Yes. He went to the park and played.
Mom: Okay. I didn't know that Columbus went to a park.
Annie: Well, it was an amusement park.
Mom: And, what did he do there?
Annie: I don't know... rode roller coasters?
Mom: Ohhhh... okay.
Annie: Can I go now?
Mom: Yes. Thanks for sharing your day with me.
Annie: You're welcome.

First Day of Kindergarten!!!

Today is Annie's first day of kindergarten. She has Mrs. Fox as a teacher, and we are thrilled! Uncle Kenny had Mrs. Fox, too, as did Matthew and Joey, and we all love her!
Only one of her preschool friends (Savannah) is in her class. Annie was so happy to see her. The other children are in the other kindergarten with the new teacher, Miss Ashley, or, aren't attending ICS this semester. Annie did see Daria and Brook before class, though. She was thrilled to see them, as well.

Annie was a little hesitant today, to let go of me. It's scary going to school on the first day. I hope she isn't the only girl to wear her plaid jumper. On the playground, it was a sea of navy blue, khaki and red shirts, skorts and slacks, and nary a jumper. I'm certain Annie won't notice, but as intelligent as she is, she just may decide to wear her skort tomorrow.

The pictures I took are a bit blurry because of the high humidity, but I'm sharing them anyway.

I can't believe my little baby is in kindergarten!!!

Jack ~ Our New Golden Retriever Puppy

Our neighbor's daughter needed to give away her 13 week old Golden Retriever puppy, and, even though my brain kept saying NO, once I saw him, I couldn't resist!! We named him Jack, and he has delighted Annie, Lucky and me for the past week! He is a very well-mannered puppy, slightly timid and very mellow. We adore him! Well, Lucky doesn't exactly adore him... she tolerates him... but Annie and I love him!

Annie loves ice cream, almost as much as I do! Here she is, taking in a delightful M&M flurry! She's so darned cute, if I do say so, myself.

The tombstone

I have decided to place the tombstone in the back portion of my yard, in my to be created flower bed. Rather than to re-bury it, I want it to have a pleasant resting place. I will also move my angel statue to that spot, so that it has a serene feeling. The angel statue to which I refer is found in my rose message.

We've decided (Dad and I) that the tombstone was probably placed under the stairs as fill. It was amongst many large granite rocks, so it only makes sense that it was used as such... and probably came from someone who made tombstones.

A Freaky Find!

As you know, we've been working on my front porch stairs. While everything is torn up, my father decided he would water-proof that section of the basement, so he began to dig out that area.

Little did he realize that the clay, granite and bricks weren't the only things he had tossed onto the pile!

As I was watering my flowers, I noticed something white and sparkly amongst (yes, KH, I said amongST) the granite. I picked it up, thinking it was marble, and realized, it was just a crumbly old rock... until I flipped it over. There was writing on it.

I saw several other pieces, then realized what I was holding!

It was a GRAVESTONE!!!

I was totally freaking out from the excitement of the find!

I called to Annie and she took one look at it and said, "I can help you put this puzzle together, Mommy."

Then, when I told her what it was, she exclaimed, "See! I told you Blookie Nu was real!!"

Blookie Nu has been Annie's imaginary friend since she was two years old... ironically... when we moved into this house.

So, that sort of freaked me out, too, but not too much. I don't really mind that my daughter has an imaginary friend, until she starts arguing with him, because that's just weird. Anyway, I guess finding a tombstone under one's stairs can be a little creepy, but, I'm not scared. It is a little disconcerting, though.

Now, the tombstone is laying on my front porch. From what I gather, it says

"Mary A"

"J & E Fought"

"Died"

"Jan. 30, 1876"

"Aged"

"1 y & 12 d"

What do YOU think???

Ode to S. H.

Ode to S. H.

The rock glittered
Snowy on the inside
shadowy on the out
while shards of silence
sprung forth
like a punch in the stomach.
His secret tried to sprout,
covered in clay
and granite,
wretching forth
despite being stomped.
It bloomed in death.
His secret, his sepulchre.

A Rose is a Rose is a Rose

I love Gertrude Stein's intellect, hence my title. She was such a character, yet, with a vast sense of brilliance. I wonder what she would have been like, living in today's society? Would she be a human rights activist? Would she just hang with her artsy friends?

At any rate, I wanted to share the first roses of the season with you. Here they are... with my guardian angel statue... looking lovely, despite the numbers on the statue.

The Steps are Gone!

My front porch steps are gone! A big man in a big excavator came to my house and chunked them away! What is amazing to me is that beneath the old concrete steps is a sort of hole where big chunks of granite and bricks were thrown. We pulled much of the granite out, so that I could use it as landscaping rock. I was using brick before that. The granite will be much nicer! These are glorious chunks of sparkly, crystal-filled granite, too! I'm very excited about it.

The Otto Meyer Family

This post is for Ginny! I was able to scan this photo a while ago, for my mother, who borrowed it from either Ginny or Tom. At any rate, this is my mother's family... Gramma, Mom, Papa, Mady, Tom and Ginny. I love Gramma's dress! Gosh, I wish she'd have saved some of those clothes!!
PS to Ginny -- Doesn't Papa look an awful lot like Bobby in this picture?

Beth

Okay, so, I never post pictures of my siblings, so here's one of them.
I took this picture yesterday, as I was showing Beth how to use my old digital camera. The picture was cute! It's a good one of her.

From Easter...

This is an older photo... but this was Annie's Easter Coloring Contest prize this past holiday.
I was so proud!!
Annie said, "Mommy! I'm so proud of my fingers!!"

Cutie Cowgirl Annie

When she grows up, Annie wants to be a Cowgirl-Veterinarian-Manicurist who charges $5 to paint nails and fixes kitties and puppies for free. She's my kind of gal!
Annie begged me to take her picture wearing her cowgirl hat. Despite the Mary Janes, she's fairly convincing! Doesn't that smile just wreak of personality? She's so confident and I hope she never loses that. I lost mine 30 years ago, and if I can help it, Annie will never lose hers.

Our Birthday Bash - April 26

It's the first time since 2000 that Kavita and I were able to celebrate our birthday together!
I drove to Columbus and we met with three of Kavita's friends for dinner at The Spaghetti Warehouse. We dined on pasta, drank Sangria (my first time -- I like!!), and ate that pitiful little frozen birthday cake. All in all, it was a great time!
The pictured are: Roopa, Kay, Bea = The Cake = and Kavita and me! Kavita's wearing a shirt I'd made for one of my dates way back when I actually dated. I worked all weekend on that shirt, and, then, it didn't fit. So, I gave it to Kavita! It suits her, dontchya think?

Preschool Antics

With my new camera, I went to Annie's school to take a few photos of her with her friends. This is her entire class - seven children. Annie loves going to school, though she wants to learn more than she wants to play. Oh, she'll surely change her mind when kindergarten begins in three months!

Forever Blowing Bubbles

Annie just loves blowing bubbles. On this particular day, it was warm and she just couldn't wait to get outside and blow bubbles.
The pink and purple container is, allegedly, a non-spilling device. It's a little difficult for Annie to pop the wand into it, as it tends to get stuck, and pulling it out is as troubling, however, it didn't stop her from having a great time.
As you can see, her bangs were quite long in the picture, but, she wants her hair to be all one length, which is a great idea, considering I'm not a good bang-trimmer.
